Minimalist style with a touch of classic and art: a style interview with Misja | 40plusstyle.com

A while ago I discovered the fabulous website of Misja B, a streetstyle blog based in Kingdom of the netherlands. She happens to alive in my hometown of Haarlem then nosotros had a chance to take hold of up when I visited in July and talk about all things fashion.

This lady has tons of it, as do the people she photographs. Find out more about her unique mode and see photos both of herself as well equally some of her subjects throughout this commodity. Enjoy!

Can you tell united states a little bit more about yourself?

I'thou Misja Beijers, I live in The netherlands, in the cute city of Haarlem. I'm married, nosotros accept two daughters and two grandchildren (boys).
Until September 2013 I worked as an assistant of the editor at Zin magazine, which is a homo interest magazine for 50plus people.
Since that fourth dimension I've been working full fourth dimension on my blog MisjaB.nl

Besides that I have a photo column in Zin. Every month I take a picture of a (50 plus) adult female or man on the street and interview her/him, in gild to write a little, personal story.

As a point of reference which age group do you belong to or perhaps you lot are willing to share your historic period?

Of form I will share my age, I was built-in in May 1952, so I'm 63 years old.

Carla

Can y'all tell us a bit more virtually your website Misja B and why you created it?

Some six years ago my daughters told me about The Sartorialist. The human being behind is Scott Schumann and he's photographing by and large young, fashionable people all over the world.

I immediately thought that would be interesting to do, and then focus on people my ain age.

At the fourth dimension there were already a lot of young people blogging about fashion and photographing themselves. But there were non many people of my age doing the aforementioned thing.
Till that time I did not have much experience photographing, and so first I decided to larn more about it during a photo training.

For my weblog I photograph women and men on the street, who are slightly older (fifty plus) and wait fashionable and cute.
I ever inquire permission to take a photo, which gives me the the opportunity to make contact and most of the time take a pleasant talk. During which time people tell me more about their clothes and style.

Every at present and so I ask street style lensman Gaston Wals to take some pictures of me, to feature my ain style on my blog too.

Equally a motto for my piece of work I use a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt: 'Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, cute older people are works of fine art'.

Christien

What attracts yous in the style of others?

That'south hard to explicate. I call back the most important thing is that you can see that someone feels comfortable and thereby looks confident.
Of course I like information technology when people apparel like I do, in the sense of 'less is more'. Only on the other hand I love watching people who dare to exaggerate. They are, in my opinion, much more creative in mixing and matching colors and materials and creating a beautiful outfit or quirky outfit.

How would you describe your ain mode?

I would say my style is minimalistic, only not to the extreme, contemporary with a bear on of the archetype, and a petty chip artistic.

What would y'all consider the most important components of your style?

I like special details and cute materials, quality is important
I adopt less = more.
I love argument pieces, like big rings. Ever since I had to wear glasses, I've always chosen a striking frame.

Where do yous live and how does that influence your style?

I live in Haarlem, a beautiful, old city with about 160.000 inhabitants. Information technology's located near the North Sea, so we tin get to the embankment by wheel.
Information technology's also well-nigh the city of Amsterdam and that city influences my style more than than Haarlem does. In Amsterdam you lot observe a varied population and a lot more shops, so that I can shop at COS but also at exclusive brands like Dries van Noten or loftier stop shops like Van Ravenstein. And there are of class many markets, of which the Noordermarkt is the most important one for me, offer both secondhand likewise equally vintage clothing.

Exercise you feel you lot take a signature style?

If you can say that about yourself, I call up I do. Like 1 of my friends sometimes tells me: "Oh I saw 'a Misja-skirt', the other day'".

Miriam

What inspires your outfit choices the almost?

Starting time of all I'm body conscious: I ever expect at apparel and think whether the shape will flatter my figure. I desire to wear apparel that are suitable for piece of work, so they take to be practical merely at the same time expect fashionable and fashionable. I like items that I can fashion in different means, so I can wear them to different occasions.

Details are important to me, I dearest the way apparel are made, the way apparel are sewn or wait on the within. Or well chosen lines. For example: the other day I bought a vintage glaze, which has a ingenious blind closure. You lot can see that the designer has paid a lot of attention to information technology.

I'm not looking at colors then much, materials and fabrics are more important to me. I'yard not focussed on brands or designers but on beauty.

And final but not least all items take to complement my wardrobe. I love good quality, rather than quantity. For me it's important that my clothes are timeless, and so that I tin can article of clothing them for many years.

I like to mix and match, that's the way my female parent taught me. She used to say: "If you buy a slice of vesture, recollect about what y'all will wear information technology with.'

Richard

Do you lot take things similar colour profiling or body type into account when y'all dress?

Yes, certainly. I'yard body witting, but colors are not that of import to me. I normally choose muted colors and make a combination with i colorful item, similar a scarf, band or necklace.

Has your style changed at all after turning 40?

I don't think my style has changed, but there are some differences. For example I don't vesture short sleeves anymore and present I merely wear skirts at knee length or lower.

A plunging neckline was never a favorite, and then that'southward no issue. And I often choose flat, comfy, only never the less stylish, shoes. Fortunately there is a lot of pick in that kind of shoes!

I simply wear loftier heels at (very) special occasions.

My hair is getting more than and more grey. I'm satisfied with it, I notice it complements my skin tone.

Thysa

Do you believe in dressing 'age appropriately' and what does it mean to you?

Yes, but I'll speak for myself, considering everybody has to make her/his own choices of grade. Just for me, I e'er wonder if an particular is yet historic period appropriate. Information technology too has to adjust my face, later on all I have many more than wrinkles than I did when I was in my forties!

Would you say that at this stage of your life you are now more, or less interested in manner, mode and the manner you look?

I was always interested in fashion and looking good has been important to me at every age. Merely nowadays I have more time to pay attending to my clothes and sometimes I tin can afford ownership something special.

Why is the way you look important to you?

Wearing something I feel comfy in, gives me more conviction. Not worrying about my clothes, gives me the opportunity to focus on other important things or people.

Clothing is also a manner of communication, it's a language without words. For example, you brand a argument wearing a large hat!

Do yous follow trends? And if yes, which trends excite y'all at the moment?

No, not actually, however I do similar some trends. For example flat shoes with thick soles. I love them, because of the comfort and because the soles make me a scrap taller!

Do you have any style and style tips for women over forty?

Take a good look at your body, where has it changed? Ask yourself whether or non information technology's necessary to colour your pilus, because nearly of the time 1'south natural color suits ane'due south pare tone perfectly.

Margriet

What are your plans for your website and how exercise you come across information technology develop over the coming years?

I love working on my website and I'm always excited when I get new visitors and followers.
It'south then special to know that someone, somewhere in the globe, is happy with the photos I took.

I would also like to write in English language on my blog. It'due south a challenge for me, merely sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone. It'due south not easy for me to write in English, merely I 'yard going to ask my followers to correct me whenever I make a (big) mistake.

In September I will visit New York during Fashionweek. Certainly I hope to run into bloggers, Instagram and FB followers there.
And of course beautiful and special women and men in the streets of New York!

On my wishlist are many more cities to visit. I think it'southward interesting to see the various style of 50 plus people in different cities and countries. Then side by side fourth dimension it may exist Milan, Hamburg or Kopenhagen. And, like Audrey Hepburn said: 'Paris is always a good idea!'

Jan-Jansen

Anything farther you would like to add?

Be proud of your age! Life is great, also when you get older. You lot can still exist attractive. Relish the good and beautiful things in life:
they make yous feel good and that makes you look good!

And don't forget to smile, because: "You're never fully dressed without a grinning!'
